Auntie June’s Scottish Tablet

If an authentic taste of Scotland is one you’re after, then look no further than tablet. It’s the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon cup of tea or coffee with a good book. My Auntie June’s tablet is legend in our family and I swear it’s the best version you’ll ever taste. We’re talking melt-in-the-mouth, crumbly deliciousness here! To make it yourself, here’s the recipe:


900g caster sugar

1 tin of condensed milk

1/4 pint of milk

125g butter

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence 


Mix the caster sugar, butter and milk until all has melted. Finally stir in the condensed milk.

Bring the mixture to the boil and then let it simmer for a good 20-30 mins whilst stirring continuously. Add the vanilla essence then take it off the heat and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon for a good 5-7 minutes.

At this stage, the mixture will have changed from a pale colour and silky consistency to a thick, caramel which you will notice starts to set at the sides of the pan. This is the best indicator of it being ready. If it’s not quite there, then by all means turn up the heat a bit again and repeat the aforementioned process of simmer then beat.

Pour the mixture into a greased tin and as it starts to set score the tablet into squares. Leave to cool for at least 1 hour then enjoy! Tablet is also amazing crumbled over ice cream. YOU READ IT HERE FIRST!
